Extended Coverage with Complete Tracking: Introducing Opta Vision for 2024-25

By: Stats Perform

Following the launch of Opta Vision last summer, dozens of professional football clubs and leagues worldwide have been utilising the platform’s wide range of AI-enriched, predictive metrics to get one step ahead of their rivals and enhance their analysis of players and teams.

As we approach the start of another European club campaign, our OptaAI team has introduced the next phase of Opta Vision, which comprises complete player tracking data, enabling forward-thinking teams to take their global football analysis to the next level.

Until now, complete and uninterrupted player tracking has only been possible using in-stadium systems, and the outputs are both technically difficult to use and not broadly accessible.

However, thanks to computer vision and generative AI techniques pioneered by OptaAI, Opta Vision is able to accurately capture all player movement, even when players are outside of the camera shot, from the first minute until the final whistle.

The unique and innovative process for generating this data, at scale, was outlined by Chief Scientist, Patrick Lucey, in his talk at the Opta Forum earlier this year, available to watch online.

This data is being captured for an expanded number of men’s and women’s competitions, with Opta Vision’s global coverage increasing by 35% compared to the last campaign.

Every game played in more than 60 competitions is now available, allowing recruitment analysts and tacticians at clubs to easily profile and compare the physical performance of thousands of players worldwide alongside all their on-ball actions, with both tracking and event datasets fully synchronised into a single feed for ease of analysis.

Opta Vision’s existing suite of AI metrics include Shape Analysis, Pass Predictions, Pressure Intensity and Line Breaking Passes, which all allow analysts to develop a better understanding of a player’s on-ball tendencies and decision-making in a game.

Another brand new Opta Vision metric, Active Runs, is also being introduced in 2024-25, which allows analysts to review off-ball runs made by a player in a game.

As well as being available in feeds, Opta Vision data and metrics are available for media analysis via OptaAI Studio and for team analysts via Stats Perform’s ProVision software.
