Key findings highlighted in the review include:
– Borussia Mönchengladbach, who ranked second for open play xG, could only achieve 75% of FC Bayern München’s total (55.7 vs 75).
– Bundesliga newcomers 1.FC Union Berlin scored the lowest number of open play goals, but amassed 14.5 xG from set play situations, the highest of any team in the competition.
– As outlined in our profile on Hansi Flick earlier this summer, Bayern adopted a more aggressive approach to pressing following his appointment, which resulted in them completing the most high turnovers in the Bundesliga by a huge margin (248).
– Chelsea-bound Timo Werner created 65 chances following a carry, 18 more than any other Bundesliga player.
– Following his move to Dortmund in January, Erling Haaland exceeded his xG per 90 projection, 0.74, by significant margins in both xGOT (0.95) and goals scored (1.1).
– Thomas Müller, who set a new record for assists in a single Bundesliga campaign (21, with 20 coming from open play), also ranked top in the competition for xA per 90.
